What Is Hanukkah?

Hanukkah begins at sunset on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. Its celebration continues on Thursday, December 2, 2010, and finishes at nightfall on Thursday, December 9, 2010.

Hanukkah (sometimes spelled “Chanukah”) is known as the Festival of Lights, a Jewish holiday that commemorates Israel’s freedom from the oppressive Syrian-Greek rule and the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.

What Do People Do to Celebrate Hanukkah?

Most Hanukkah traditions take place at home. Each night celebrants light a special lamp called called a menorah or hanukkiah,  play dreidel, and sing songs. In recent times, under the influence of Christmas, Hanukkah has also become a popular gift-giving holiday.

Chill a bottle of Manichewitz Concord Grape Passover wine.  Substitute the wine for the cold water portion of the grape Jello recipe on the box. You can pour into shot glasses and serve with tiny spoons for an added touch.

Alternative Vodka-Based Shooters

This drink is typically served as a shooter although it also great on the rocks or served up in a cocktail glass.
Build in a mixing glass with ice.

1/2 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz. Chambord
1/2 oz. Sweet & Sour

Monday, February 14 is Saint Valentine’s Day

We call it Valentine’s Day and it is an annual commemoration celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. Kwanzaa Traditions:
Honoring Black Unity, Family Bonds and an African Heritage

A relatively new winter holiday, Kwanzaa was established in 1966 to celebrate and reaffirm African American identity and culture. Currently, an estimated two million people take part in this seven-day harvest celebration each year, and for many black Americans, it has joined Christmas as a major focus of the season. Although the holiday is still relatively young, its seven guiding principles (unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith) lend themselves to the creation of a host of meaningful traditions.

As with all gatherings and celebrations, Kwanzaa means food and libations! Since we are talking about shot glasses here, we’ve brought you some recipes that can add to your Kwanzaa celebration of African-American identity, culture and unity. While these are typically served in regular cocktail glassware, they also make fun shooters for our great shot glasses. Eggnog and Kahlua

This popular drink needs just two obvious ingredients:

* eggnog
* Kahlua or other preferred coffee-flavored liqueur

Directions: Pour 4-5 ounces of eggnog for every 1 ounce of Kahlua and stir. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or whipped cream to suit individual tastes. For those planning to drink more than one or two glasses, light eggnog is recommended.

Ginger Snap

This festive beverage requires a blender for best results.

* 4 ounces of eggnog
* 3/4 ounce of spiced rum
* 1/2 ounce of brandy
* 1 ginger snap

For those who prefer not to mix their alcohols, however, substituting the brandy for additional spiced rum can be less expensive and better tasting.

Champagne Cocktail

Champagne is a traditional drink for celebrations.  Frangelico is so mellow it’s the essence of holiday good will. You’ll prefer one of our larger glasses for this drink. We sell all sizes! See http://www.barsupplies.com/drinkware-barconic-glassware for our larger bar products.

* 2 ounces of cognac
* 3/4 ounce of Frangelico
* 1/2 ounce of lemon juice
* champagne
* candied cherries

Shake the cognac, Frangelico, and lemon juice in a shaker. Divide the shaker contents between six Champagne glasses and top them off with champagne and a red cherry. The lemon juice can be replaced by most citrus-flavored liquors for those who want a little more kick. If choosing the latter, lose the cherry.

Celebrate With Red and Gold Jello Shots

The basic idea of making jello shots is pretty simple, but very important if you don’t have a recipe.  Substitute half of the water in the directions with the desired liquor.  Dissolve the jello with the hot water and add the alcohol to it only after the water/gelatin mix is cool to the touch.  If you add the alcohol while the mixture is still hot, it will evaporate.  You do not want your alcohol to evaporate.  What’s the point, then?

The majority of recipes on this site are proportioned to one 3-ounce box of gelatin.   Each box should make about 20 gelatin shots, depending on the size of the cups you use.  While 20 sounds like a lot, it will probably only serve 3 to 4 partiers. If you’re planning a huge party, you may want to stock up on lots more jello.

Get Your RED On

Jello Bomb. Makes 20 shots.

8 ounces water

One 3-ounce package cherry Jello

4 ounces 7-Up
3 ounces Jagermeister

1. Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan.
2. In a medium, heatproof bowl, stir together cherry Jello and boiling water until gelatin is totally dissolved, allow to cool.
3. Add the 7-Up and Jagermeister to the mix and stir until completely combined.
4. Pour mix into your little cups and refrigerate for 4 – 6 hours until firm.

How About Some GOLDEN Shots?

Great Island Rum. Makes 20 shots.

One 3-ounce package pineapple Jello
1 cup water
½ cup coconut rum
¼ cup orange rum
¼ cup banana rum

1. Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan.
2. In a medium, heatproof bowl, stir together pineapple Jello and boiling water until gelatin is totally dissolved.
3. Add the coconut rum, orange rum, and banana rum to the bowl and stir until well mixed.
4. Pour mix into your little cups and refrigerate 2 – 4 hours until firm.

You can add candy, fruit or other edible things to your shots. No potential choking things, please!

Adding Strange and Wonderful Elements to Your Shots

Gummy Bears, Worms, and Whatever…

To do this, just chill your gelatin mix in the fridge for at least 15 minutes before pouring into any other containers. This will thicken the mixture a
bit so that items will float easier, but the gelatin can still be poured into containers. Take the batch out of the fridge, and then fold the chosen fruit or other edible addition into the gelatin in the mixing bowl. Make sure that the jello surrounds it.  Now you can transfer that and the jello into the pan or mold of your choice. Just use a toothpick to adjust the positioning of the item. Then continue to refrigerate until jello shots are ready to
go.

Guests will love espresso shots when they come in from the cold.

Espresso Shots Recipe

Makes 4 shots

For a tasty addition:
1/4 cup orange juice
1/8 cup sugar

Shot Ingredients:
2 ounces tequila
1 ounce Kahlúa
1 ounce Cointreau
2 ounces cold espresso

Place the orange juice and the sugar in two different shallow  bowls.  Dip the shot glasses first in the orange juice and then in the sugar. This will add a nice contrast and taste to your shots.

In a cocktail shaker full of ice, mix the rest of the ingredients.  Shake well.  Pour into shot glasses. We added a little frothed  milk for a real espresso experience and to cool the glass enough that it’s not hot in your fingers.

Feel the warmth! Added bonus: You’ll be awake enough to enjoy the people around you!

Consider Making your Own Liqueur!

Making liqueurs is a fun and rewarding hobby. The process used to make most liqueurs is very simple, and experienced liqueur makers can easily create their own unique recipes.

When making a liqueur, most people start with vodka because it very versatile and adds little flavor to the finished product.

Rum would also work very well. You can use other hard alcohols, such as tequila or whiskey, but they will alter the flavor of your liqueur. In order to turn the vodka (or whatever base you’re using) into a liqueur, you simply add some sort of flavoring, such as fruit or espresso, and allow the vodka to absorb the flavor. You then add a sweetener to the flavored vodka, and presto – you have a liqueur.
